As Star Touch Fails To Reach Profits Toronto Star Shuts Down App (Update)


Toronto StarJohn Boynton, President of Torstar Corp. and Publisher of the Star via a memo announced it was shutting down the Star Touch.

The company had poured millions into the tablet app that was to be the publisher’s game changer, and drive new advertising revenues to the company. 

He went on to say a “universal” app for both smartphones and mobile would be launched in August. The news also meant that staff would be laid off according to an internal memo 29 full time and one part time staff would be part of this shift.

Torstar lost $24.4 million in the first quarter of its 2017 fiscal year, has spent over $35 million on Star Touch since its launch.

Update– Profectio has also learned that eyereturn Marketing (part of Torstar) has had some staff transitions, these are not as a result of the Star Touch app being shut down.
