Blue Jay TwitterWe’ve mention in the past that it was only a matter of time before Twitter set up shop in Toronto. With the largest number of Canadian headquarters in one city, an office in Toronto only makes sense. We’ve all known for months that the social network with over 200,000 users will be filling its initial public offer (IPO) very soon. They also set up partnership with Vancouver-based HootSuite.

The question on everyone’s mind for the last year has been – when? When will Twitter make it official, hire some Canadian (yes, you really should have your Canadian team based in Canada) and start selling to Bay Street.

We’ve got some good news and bad news for you. They are opening an office, but they do have some specific criteria they have identified in the “right” individuals who can be part of the first round of hires for Twitter Canada. It only makes sense, since they will be going head to head against Facebook Canada, Google Canada, LinkedIn Canada and others in the digital advertising players in the game.

So here’s a combination of what we know and what makes sense for next steps (not shared in any particular order):

  • Twitter staff LOVE Canadian brands
  • Twitter staff find March cold in Canada
  • Twitter staff have a short list of potential Canadians they have met with
  • It is March now, so it would probably take 2 more months to finalize employment contracts and find an office location
