Traditional TV Gets A Nail In Its Coffin As Netflix Streams More Than One Billion Hours In June

Want more proof that the Internet is having an impact on traditional media?  Yesterday, Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix turned to his Facebook page to announced that their streaming video service served up more than 1 billion hours of content in the month of June 2012.

 “Netflix monthly viewing exceeded 1 billion hours for the first time ever in June,” the executive revealed. “When House of Cards and Arrested Development debut, we’ll blow these records away.” The 1 billion hours of collective viewing comes to a monthly average of 38 hours per streaming subscriber according to the Associated Press, an increase from 28 hours per customer in December. Netflix has more than 26 million streaming subscribers in the United States, Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom and Ireland. The company offers its streaming service for $7.99 per month.

Considering that Netflix is now capable of streaming its content to any Internet-enabled device the number shouldn’t be that surprising.  It will be interesting to see how much content they stream in September as the new fall shows begin to air.
