Over the weekend the Sunday Times wrote a story suggesting that Research In Motion was considering a split between its handset division and messaging network into two separate companies. The paper also went on to say that Amazon or Facebook were potential buyers of the hardware division as RIM continues to find new ways to keep itself afloat as it continues to struggle. News also came out last week that Toronto’s Celestica announced they would “wind down” manufacturing services for Research in Motion over the next three to six months. Celestica has been a big part of RIM’s ecosystem over the years so this is definitely a blow, but for all we know RIM may have already cut a deal with a competitor to replace Celestica.
Personally, I think RIM is nothing without its hardware business (well except the Playbook), so sorry Sunday Times but its a different day now.
