Where Are Canada’s Cool Politicians?

Yesterday President Barack Obama, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, House Leader Nancy Pelosi, over 500 Facebook employees, and a number of media and press attended a Town Hall meeting at Facebook HQ. The event was hosted on LiveStream which they graciously provided the link to Profectio to watch it live.  A number of issues were to be discussed including

The mere fact that an event like this was held off the White House grounds at and the head quarters of one of the most innovative companies in the United States just goes to show that Obama is walking the walk and is a really cool dude!

I can’t help but look at the politicians that we have across Canada, I’m sure all nice men and women, however why are they not using their political clout to help bring a spotlight on technology that comes out of Canada?  Let’s focus on three individuals in particular, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and Mayor of Toronto Rob Ford. Harper, well I can’t think of a tremendous about that he has done for Canada.

Going back a few months when Waterloo-based Research In Motion was facing a huge challenge with India it was Obama who stepped in and tried to settle it.  Where was Harper?  Doesn’t Canada benefit from the tax dollars that RIM helps to create their jobs, product and service use?   Now let’s move on to McGuinty, he did make a stop to Polar Mobile a few months back and helped to create quite a bit of buzz for the Toronto startup.  He’s also been a big supporter of the clean technology sector attending and hosting missions abroad.   As for Rob Ford, it is as Janet Jackson once said “What Have You Done For Me Lately?”  Since he’s been in the role I can’t think of one major thing he has done to help further Toronto’s technology sector.  Toronto is after all the 3rd Largest ICT cluster in Norther America and has produced a number of great technology companies.
Oh well, Toronto’s technology community has put itself on the map despect government support in the past and it sure will continue to grow without it.
