Toronto International Film Festival launches mobile competition

The buzz around the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and I’ve already started to receive emails from people looking for “party invitations.” TIFF, MTV, Motorola launched a mobile film competition designed to celebrate film, creative expression and innovative talent. Starting July 5, 2007, “For The Reel” invites aspiring directors to create a two-minute film on a Motorola mobile phone for prizes including an all-expense-paid trip to the Toronto International Film Festival, Motorola mobile devices and the premiere of the winning film on “MTV Live,” MTV’s flagship series. Integrating promotional elements on television and online, “For the Reel” submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges with the winning film determined by public votes on MTV.ca.

“MTV in Canada has always pushed the envelope with edgy and stylistically creative content across every platform,” said Brad Schwartz, Senior Vice-President and General Manager of MTV in Canada. “Leading up to the Toronto International Film Festival, this competition engages our viewers and offers us the opportunity to partner with organizations looking to showcase the undiscovered talent of up and coming Canadian filmmakers.”

Toronto International Film Festival has lacked in their ability to incorporate into the annual event so this new competition is a great step in the right direction and another way to help generate tremendous buzz as well as bring in that next generation of film makers. The 2007 Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 6 – 15.
