Congratulations to all 102 nominated individuals, the mere fact of being nominate means that you’ve made an impact on someone so continue the great work in 2009! If you didn’t make the list well make sure and stay close, based on the feedback we’ll be doing more competitions and already have a few things in store for later this year.
Here is this list of all 102 Influential Social Media Individuals in Canada.

Actually, it seems that the list is in reverse alphabetical order by last name.
Congratulations to the semi-finalists .. know about half of them, all those I know are influential for me.
Like Jon, I know about half the list. The other half, well, I guess I’ll be doing some networking over the next few months.
Glad to be part of such a distinguished list of semi-finalists. I’m sharing the accolade with an Internet star (Amber MacArthur), an award winning journalist (Ingram) and a guy who shared the stage with Bill Clinton (Mitch Joel). Way cool.
Great idea Dave. Can’t wait to see what else you drum up.
#27 needs to be cleaned up — it’s two different people squashed into one.
making the names links would be awesome.
Congrats to everyone for making the list! A great bunch of folks for sure.
David
Hey, where’s Tod Maffin? Did he not receive enough votes? Isn’t he one of North America’s leading experts on social media? That’s what his website says. So my question is if someone as big and influential as Tod Maffin is left out, can you elaborate a bit on your methodology? Who did the nominations come from? Anyone? Or people in your social circle? Readers of this obscure blog? Am curious to hear more…
Frank – thanks for making such a “unique” comment. If you read back through the previous posts that were linked in this one you’ll see that:
1 – nominations were done by the community
2 – voting was done by the community
Feels great to be listed amongst such influential individuals!
Dave,
I think this type of list has some value as I’d love to follow the some of the folks I don’t know from the list but could I ask so kindly for their names to be links to their twitter profiles so I don’t need to copy and paste 30 into my browser. Clicking is so much fun and after all it is Twitter we are talking about not just a list of names.
Cheers,
Jay
Duh, I should probably learn to read it is folks in all of Social Media here. I should not comment when I’ve not had coffee. I should say we’d love links to their sites not blogs although twitter profiles would be good too.
Pardon my silliness.
Twitter ID’s next to all of those names would rock
I’m very happy for Kris, Darren, Rebecca and Kate, all of them whom I consider good friends. I am glad that Cory and Michael Geist made the list. But I’m also puzzled about some people who didn’t make the cut. Anyhow, sometimes these seem like popularity contests
>>>Anyhow, sometimes these seem like popularity contests
Yes, but at its core, that’s what social media boils down to – being popular and having a large reach because so many people pay attention to you as a result of your popularity. I’m always confused at how someone will mention social media being a popularity contest, with an implied tone of surprise.
Raul – this is NOT a popularity contest; if you go back to the original post (3) different metrics are being used.
1 – nominations & votes from the community (so I’ll agree with Rae’s comments above)
2 – Postrank’s tool to measure “engagement”
3 – Individuals contributions by speaking and/ or hosting events where social media is a topic being discussed during the event.
Honoured to be on the list! Congrats to everyone!
-Amber Mac
It’s funny how bare the names seem without a link to something. It’s like the names aren’t complete without the link to who they actually are – almost like it’s just initials.
Congrats to the semi-finalists; delighted to be on the list! Oh, and Miss 604 has done a great community service and posted the list with links! http://www.miss604.com/2009/01/northern-voice-2009-and-social-media-update.html Thanks, Rebecca!!
Cheers .. Kate
I am very flattered to be on such a distinguish list and I thank you for it. I would just want to point out that my name is Michelle Blanc rather than Michel Leblanc. Thank again
Congratulations to everyone mentioned here. I’m flattered to be on a list like this; I feel completely out of place. Thanks!
This is quite an honour to be included on this list. Thank you Dave and to everyone who voted!
It’s an honor to be counted as a semi-finalist, thank you and congrats to all 102 nominees!
Ok, I have a response both for Dave and Rae which will be better formulated in a post (and it’s 2:14 am so I don’t really have the full post well written and I’m not going to risk it).
First off, and as a prelude, I have to say that I don’t do social media for a living. And I’m very grateful for that. I entered the world of social media because my blog became more popular, I socialized with the Vancouver tech/social media/PR community and they are my friends. In fact, many Canadian social media experts are my friends (not only Vancouver-based). I absolutely love Kate, Darren, Kris and Rebecca, all whom are in the semi-finalists. All of them, social media stars in their own merit.
I *do* feel as though it is sometimes a popularity contest and no, Rae, I am NOT surprised. Let me be brash and bold and say that being popular doesn’t equal being smart, well-spoken, and having brilliant ideas. You have Paris Hilton as an example of popular and not having a lot “upstairs”.
Also, for the record, I did NOT say that THIS was particularly a popularity contest, Dave. However, if you think about my viewpoint in detail, at least the first part IS a popularity contest (voting by the community, etc.) – the more popular a particular candidate is, the more votes he/she will get. Let’s just call things what they are.
As for the second and third metrics, one can find all the flaws that they may want, and I could poke relentlessly until I found all of those. But that’s not my point. As I said, I celebrate that Kris, Rebecca, Kate and Darren are in the semifinalists, but I’m puzzled as to why other social media stars didn’t make the cut. That’s all.
Dave – for the record, I might copy and paste some of this comment on my own blog.
