Former BlackBerry Chief Balsillie Appointed To Lead Canada Clean Technology Fund

Jim BalsillieFormer Research in Motion CEO and Co-Fouder Jim Balsillie is staying close to his passion for Canada and the technology industry.  Jim has been named Chair of the Sustainable Development Technology Canada, a not-for-profit foundation that invests in clean technology projects. He will hold the part-time position for a five-year term.

The Ottawa-based fund has invested 592 million Canadian dollars ($565 million) in 245 projects since it was founded in 2001. The Canadian government recently allocated C$325 million over eight years to the fund.

In his new role, Jim will take over the responsibilities of outgoing chair Juergen Puetter, the president of Aeolis Wind Power, and support projects that develop new technologies that promote sustainable development across Canada.

In 2010, Balsillie was appointed to the United Nations Secretary General’s High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability.

Jim is no stranger to the technology sector, and he and Mike Lazaridis Co-Founded RIM (now known as Blackberry), Jim stepped down from the RIM board of directors in 2012.
