Game developer Ubisoft announced this week they have picked up THQ Montreal as well as the publishing rights for the upcoming South Park: The Stick of Truth video game, being developed externally by Obsidian. No financial terms of the deal were disclosed, but Ubisoft will also have access to the yet-to-be announced IP in development at the studio. THQ Montreal will join Ubisoft’s development teams, already the second-largest in-house development staff in the world with 26 studios in 19 countries and more than 6,250 people dedicated to video game production.
THQ has been in financial troubles for a while, and courts have since approved the sale of THQ assets which resulted in bids from 10 different companies. This also now creates some speculation as to the future of Patrice Desilets, who was the Creative Director at Ubisoft until June 2010 when he took some time away from the gaming industry. He then joined THQ which did create a legal battle in the courts.
