Rogers Media (a division) of Rogers has announced that it is shutting either of its online media properties including CanadianParents.com, SweetSpot.ca, SweetSpotQC.ca, Branchez-Vous.com, Ciné-Horaire.com, LeCinema.ca, Matin.qc.ca and Showbizz.net.

Joanna sold the site to Rogers and has since gone on has since gone on to launch her new venture Dealuxe.ca, which she launched May 2011. The news hits home pretty hard for Joanna as she tweets out:

@DealuxeCEO – Devastating news…@sweetspotdotca is no longer. It seems the entrepreneurial spirit at “big red” died with Ted Rogers. #shameshameshame

According to Jason Tafler, Rogers Media’s Chief Digital Officer, “Decisions like this are never easy,” Tafler wrote. “Leading companies in any industry must take calculated risks and learn from their experiences in the marketplace.  “We acquired these websites over the past several years, and despite solid user and advertiser engagement, we are making the strategic decision to focus our resources on multiplatform integration and growth opportunities for our premium brands.”
While the news is shocking to many, it might signal a few coming changes at Rogers, one of which could a shift in focus away from the Quebec market and emphasizing more on English speaking markets.  Not to mention Rogers really it could also be the snow ball of Rogers cleaning house after having announced a number of layoffs last month.
